Theme: Power of Youth in South Africa
I want to start by saying that I’ve never been so excited to share a testimony. I feel that the time God allowed our team to spend in South Africa was such an incredible blessing. And I feel that we were truly able to witness the Holy Spirit at work.
It was difficult for me to choose from everything that happened in South Africa what to share with you tonight. But after a lot of prayer and consideration, I started to realize that God was showing me one recurring theme throughout the entire trip – and that is how He is using missions to empower the younger generation of people in South Africa.
I’ll start off by talking about what our team did in South Africa over 2 weeks. After we arrived in Cape Town, we started children’s ministry by doing VBS everyday in a township called Khayelitsha. We also visited a middle school and did a short lesson about substance abuse there.
We painted a preschool, 1 of 26 that Pastor Ohm and African Leadership built in Khayelitsha and spent devotional time and fellowship with the African Leadership coordinators (students that are around my age). Then, we traveled 15 hours by bus to a mountainside area called Transkei where we did door-to-door evangelism and children’s ministry for four days. After the team got back, they did preschool construction to build the 26th preschool in Khayelitsha.
I’d like to share with you about the door-to-door evangelism that we did in Transkei. It was my first time doing door-to-door evangelism, and I was incredibly nervous. I was scared of rejection and worried that I wouldn’t know what to say to these people that have been living their entire lives without Jesus – how would we change their minds? I was worried that our words (as foreigners) would appear to be condescending.
Before we left, our team prayed that the Spirit would guide us, and that God would speak His truth through us to the community members. We split up into groups – I was with 3 other team members, and thankfully they took the lead on the first few houses. But around the fourth house, Missionary Kim asked me to lead the evangelism.
We were with 1 mama, and a group of about 12 children. I was so nervous – my hands were sweating and my stomach was twisting. Before I started talking, I prayed once more for the Spirit to speak through me. As I spoke, I was filled with love for the children I was speaking to. I knew in my heart that God was using us, our team, to reach out to these kids… that they would grow up and become leaders of their generation in South Africa; and servants of Christ.
By the end of our time at that house, all of the people there, including the mama came to know Christ. I was overwhelmed by God’s grace and was so excited that he used me to widen his Kingdom. I was so filled with joy that He allowed me, a person that was so full of doubt, to be part of His work.
The next story… On this trip, I met a 20-year old woman (same age as me) that was also from African Leadership that I clicked with right away. Her name is Asisipho – which means gift in Xhosa – and I honestly believe she was God’s gift to me on this trip. I felt such a deep connection to her, almost as if I had grown up with her my whole life. And I was able to tell her things about my life that I have never told anyone before. Her knowledge of God’s Word, and also her love for God’s Word, and His people absolutely blew me away.
Asisipho doesn’t have the things that we have here – she doesn’t live in a nice house – in fact she lives in a tiny shack, she doesn’t have the opportunities that a 20 year old girl in Canada (like myself) has. But I can say that I’ve never met anyone more full of joy.
One verse that really comes to mind, that I think captures her is Matthew 6:19-21: Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
God showed me what His joy is through Asisipho. Through her, he taught me about Kingdom love, about storing up my treasures in heaven rather than on earth, about forgiveness, and prayer. She has helped me grow so much in my faith. Everyday she messages me words of encouragement and prayers.
I can’t accurately explain how much my faith and spirit was changed through my meeting her. I went to South Africa with this mindset – that I am going to serve God’s people there, I am going to minister to people there, I did not expect to be ministered to. Through Asisipho, I learned that being a missionary, and being part of God’s work is not only about giving; it is about receiving as well.
I hope you can see not only how much God is working in these young people, but also how much need there is for us as missionaries (short term or long term) to go back… the harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. I believe that God revealed to me His love and His passion for the youth in South Africa; so that I could come back here and share it with you, share it with the church community.
The Spirit is at work, raising up young leaders – God is very actively building His Kingdom there. But as witnesses, we need to go, we have the responsibility to share, in Africa and to the ends of the earth. Through this trip, I have learned to let go of my selfish desires, to be part of God’s bigger picture in South Africa.
I pray everyday that God would allow me to return to South Africa. And that God would send a team next year from VCC– to be part of the growth of His Kingdom there. I’d just like to say thank you so much for your support and your prayers for this mission – our team could not have done it without your help.
